Workshop “Contextualising Autistic Experience: 4 Life Domains in Therapy”

Workshop Overview:

This workshop explores the reality of being autistic within four life domains: The Personal, The Interpersonal, The Societal, and The Political. Holding these domains in mind helps therapists attune to autistic clients, empathise, appropriately read their concerns, and respond with tailored therapeutic interventions. The session will offer materials and discussion points to enhance understanding and enrich therapeutic work with autistic clients.

Learning Outcomes Covered:

  • Demonstrate improved therapeutic attunement by reading autistic clients’ communications more accurately and responding with contextually appropriate interventions that validate their experiences within broader social realities.

  • Develop enhanced clinical decision-making skills for determining when and how to explore unexpressed emotions, workplace difficulties, identity questions, and disclosure concerns with autistic clients.

  • Enjoy a discussion with other therapists, like you, who are already doing good work with autistic clients, and care deeply, and seek to talk and share and enrich an appreciation of the work we do.

What You Will Learn:

  • The importance of attuning to autistic clients’ experiences across personal, interpersonal, societal, and political domains.

  • How to hold space for clients’ emotions about societal treatment without pathologising reasonable responses to oppression.

  • Clinical approaches for working with issues around identity, workplace difficulties, and unexpressed despair.

Who Should Attend:

  • Therapists of all modalities and levels of experience, who work with or wish to work with autistic adult clients.
